Rider Experiences: Listening to Students and Families

Students and families can offer useful feedback about a school bus journey. Asking clear, practical questions helps identify what is working and what needs another discussion. This guide focuses on gathering that feedback without assuming that every student experiences travel in the same way.

Start With the Student’s Perspective

Where appropriate, ask the student about their journey in a way that suits their communication preferences. They may value a familiar routine, a clear explanation of the day or time to settle after arrival.

Notice the Everyday Details

Ask about the parts of the journey the student finds straightforward and the parts they find difficult. Keep the questions specific, such as how they felt at collection or whether they understood what would happen at arrival.

A family or support person can help share relevant feedback when needed. Avoid speaking for a student where they can express their own view.

Identify Practical Barriers

A concern might involve an unclear collection point, a changed timetable or a communication need. Record the specific issue and discuss it with the appropriate family, school and transport contacts.

Confirm any proposed change with the operator before relying on it. Availability, staffing and the allocated vehicle may affect what can be arranged.

Recognise What Is Working

Useful feedback includes the details that make a journey easier. For example, a clearly agreed handover or advance notice of a change may matter to a particular student.

Keep observations grounded in that student’s experience. One person’s preferred arrangement will not necessarily suit another.

Bring Family and School Feedback Together

Families, school staff and students may notice different parts of the journey. Comparing the relevant observations can help clarify where a practical adjustment is needed.

Use Specific, Respectful Feedback

When raising a concern, include the date, journey and issue, along with the change you would like to discuss. Share personal information only with the people who need it to resolve the matter.

Ask who will respond and how an agreed change will be recorded. Keep a copy of the current transport details so everyone works from the same arrangement.

Make Space for Different Travel Preferences

Some students may want conversation during travel; others may prefer a quieter journey. Discuss relevant preferences with the operator without assuming that a particular onboard activity, device or sensory feature is available.

If a school activity or longer journey is planned, confirm any additional support, equipment and timing needs in advance.

Review the Journey When Needs Change

Revisit the plan when the school, timetable, mobility aid or support requirements change. Ask the student and the people involved in handover whether the revised arrangement is clear.
