Accessible school transport works best when families, schools and the transport provider agree on the student’s needs before the first trip. The vehicle, equipment, boarding location, communication plan and handover process all need to suit the individual passenger.
Before confirming a service
- Describe the student’s mobility, communication and support requirements clearly.
- Provide the dimensions and weight of any wheelchair or mobility device when requested.
- Ask which accessible vehicles and securement equipment are available for the proposed route.
- Confirm who is responsible at pickup and drop-off.
- Agree on the process for absences, delays, emergencies and changes in routine.
Boarding and travel checks
The driver or authorised support person should follow the vehicle operator’s procedures and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Boarding should take place on stable ground with enough clearance. Mobility devices and occupants must be positioned and restrained using equipment suitable for the vehicle and passenger.
- Keep bags and loose items clear of boarding areas and aisles.
- Do not improvise restraint or anchorage arrangements.
- Report changes to a mobility device before the next journey.
- Ensure emergency and contact information is current.
Questions families can ask
- Has the proposed vehicle been assessed for this passenger and mobility device?
- What training and checks apply to the people operating the service?
- How are incidents, delays and missed pickups communicated?
- Can the provider explain its handover and emergency procedures?
This is general planning information, not a substitute for an individual assessment or the operator’s procedures.
Discuss an accessible transport request: contact Townsend Buses with the pickup area, destination, schedule and passenger requirements. Availability and suitable equipment will be confirmed for the request.
