Community Activities: Planning Accessible Transport

By 10/06/2024October 6th, 2026Blogs

Transport can be an important part of reaching a class, community activity or appointment. Planning starts with the person’s chosen destination and the practical arrangements needed to get there and return.

Identify Access Requirements

Discuss mobility equipment, seating, assistance and communication needs. Ask whether the allocated vehicle and staff can meet them for the proposed journey.

Confirm Locations

Agree the exact collection point, destination entrance and return location. Check who will meet the passenger at each end if a handover is needed.

Plan Around the Activity

Provide the start and finish times, including any fixed arrival deadline. Ask about options if an appointment or event runs late.

Include the Passenger’s Preferences

Wherever possible, involve the passenger in choosing the arrangement. Explain who will travel with them and confirm any companion or support-person place.

Agree on Assistance

Clarify the responsibilities of the transport operator, venue and accompanying support person. Do not assume that transport includes personal care or another support service.

Check Payment Arrangements

Request the quote and terms. If NDIS funding is intended, confirm the particular service and payment arrangement with the plan manager or relevant NDIS contact before booking.

Keep Communication Clear

Nominate a contact for changes and ask how updates will be provided. Keep private information limited to what is relevant to the journey and use the agreed channel.

Review Future Visits

If the first trip reveals a timing or access issue, discuss it before arranging repeat travel. Confirm availability for each new date or regular arrangement.
