NDIS and School Transport: Questions to Clarify Before Booking

When a school transport enquiry also involves NDIS funding or another assistance arrangement, clarify the service and payment questions before travel. A bus booking enquiry does not establish funding eligibility, and a funding discussion does not confirm that a suitable vehicle or route is available.

Separate the Questions You Need Answered

Work out what transport the student needs, who can provide it and who is responsible for payment. Each question may need confirmation from a different organisation.

Discuss the Intended Funding Arrangement

If you intend to use NDIS funding, ask the relevant NDIS contact or plan manager what applies to the student’s circumstances and the proposed service.

Request clarification before committing to a booking. Do not infer that a transport service is covered simply because it is accessible or used by a student with disability.

Check School Transport Assistance Directly

Ask the school or relevant Queensland education or transport service about any applicable school transport assistance process.

Use current guidance for the student’s own location and circumstances. Rules from New Zealand, the United Kingdom or another Australian state should not be treated as Queensland eligibility advice.

Gather the Practical Details

Prepare the school, collection point, travel days, required times and relevant access or assistance needs.

Ask Who Can Confirm Each Issue

Record who will confirm funding or payment, who will accept the booking and who will coordinate with the school. Ask what written confirmation is needed before travel.

For background, consult the official NDIS student transport in-kind supports information alongside advice about the individual situation. The page does not confirm eligibility or payment arrangements for a particular journey.

Confirm the Available Transport Option

Ask the operator whether the requested route, times, vehicle features and assistance can be accommodated. Discuss any need for an accompanying support person.

Do not assume that a particular bus, taxi, training programme, vehicle modification or allowance will be available or funded.

Keep the Family and School Informed

Make sure the people involved understand which details are confirmed and which are still being assessed.

Agree on Coordination and Changes

Confirm collection and handover arrangements with the family, school and operator. Agree how absences, timetable changes or changed passenger requirements will be reported.

Review both the transport and payment arrangements if the proposed service changes.

Use the Relevant Contacts

Ask the school, funding organisation and transport operator about the issues each is responsible for. Another family’s experience may suggest questions, but it does not confirm eligibility or availability for your student.

Townsend Buses provides school and accessible transport in Queensland. Call (07) 3094 1301 to discuss a service enquiry and the payment arrangements the operator can accept.
